The housing development scheme is the result of a successful partnership between Cannock Chase Council and Cannock based Jessup Brothers. The development will transform part of the Council’s Depot into a mixed tenure housing estate. It is the first scheme to be built with money from the Council’s £12.9m Housing Investment Fund.
The scheme is due for completion by March 2022 and will provide a total of 44 homes, of which 22 will be for open market sale and 22 will be Council homes for rent.
Councillor John Kraujalis, Portfolio Leader for Housing, said: “We are delighted to see the early progress of works on site for what is the first scheme to be built under the Housing Investment Fund.
“I am pleased that we will be delivering 22 much needed Council homes as well as 22 homes for sale. The development will transform this under-used piece of Council-owned land, and I hope the future residents of this lovely development will enjoy their new homes.”
The new council homes were made possible through the Council’s Housing Revenue Account Capital Programme Housing Investment fund and with property development finance from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Brownfield Land and Property Development Fund.
The Council successfully bid for £900,000 from the WMCA to fund land remediation works on the site.
Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street, who chairs the WMCA, said: “Despite coronavirus, the region has continued to press ahead with the investment in new homes, jobs and infrastructure that will be needed to regain our previous momentum and get our economy back on track when this pandemic is over.
“Throughout the crisis, the WMCA has used its funding to not only unlock urban sites like this one for new homes, while protecting our green belt, but to also give local people the skills they need to work in the industries of the future such as construction and digital.
“So, it’s good to see how that investment is now breathing new life into the Hawks Green Depot site as it is at many other brownfield sites across the region.”
Kieren Turner-Owen, Associate Director – Property at Frontier Development Capital, which is administering the fund for WMCA, said:
“It’s great to see the site progressing. The Hawks Green Depot development will provide private and affordable housing to the area. Funding from the WMCA is accelerating residential developments and remediating brownfield land throughout the West Midlands, as this latest investment demonstrates.”
